The gate of days

The other gates of this memorial hold a person by their trade. This one holds people bound together by what happened to them — and on those days, the trade stops mattering.

salute.nw holds those who served in uniform. badge.nw law enforcement. ladder.nw the fire service. pulse.nw emergency medicine. A person stands at one of them because of what they did for a living.

Requiem is not a trade. A firefighter, a bond trader, a Navy captain and a member of a cabin crew stand on the same ground here, because of where they were on one morning.

Requiem is the Latin word for rest. It is the first word of the old prayer for the dead — requiem aeternam dona eis, grant them eternal rest. That is what this gate is for.

Nobody arrives here a hero

The man on the hundred and fourth floor did not go to work that morning to become a hero. He went to work. What he did in the ninety minutes he had left is what this memorial records.

Four men on a flight over Pennsylvania had half an hour of telephone calls and the knowledge of what had already happened. None of them had boarded intending to storm a cockpit. They were a software account manager, a public relations executive, a medical device salesman and a man who sold sales software. They decided where their aeroplane would come down.

A schoolteacher from Concord, New Hampshire, boarded a shuttle in front of a nation of watching classrooms. Children in a daycare on the second floor of a federal building in Oklahoma City. A hundred and sixteen children and twenty-eight adults beneath a coal tip in a Welsh valley. None of them chose it. All of them belong here.

The day the rules were set aside

Arlington National Cemetery has narrow rules of eligibility: service, or a close family member of one who served. The civilian employees killed at the Pentagon on the eleventh of September qualified under none of them.

The nation made an exception. The remains that could not be individually identified lie together in Section 64, military and civilian in one ground, because the country had decided that on that day the distinction did not apply.

This gate is that decision, kept. It is the only door on this memorial that can hold a person who served in nothing at all — which is most of the dead of that morning, and all of the children of Aberfan.

One person, many doors

A New York firefighter killed in the north tower is not on two memorials. He is one man with one record, appearing at ladder.nw because of his service and here because of his death. The gates are lenses, not copies. Nothing is duplicated and nobody is counted twice.

Each day within this gate carries its own name, its own colours and its own weight. The eleventh of September does not look like Shanksville, and Shanksville does not look like a valley in Wales.

Some of these days are not finished

Twenty-five years on, people are still dying of the eleventh of September. More have now died of the illnesses they took from that site than were killed on the morning itself, and they are dying still.

A man who walked down eighty flights and out into the street, and who dies of a cancer in 2031, was killed by the same attack as the man who never got out. This gate holds them together, because the same morning took them both. With one it simply took longer.

No roll here is closed. A day that goes on taking people goes on receiving names.

What is here now

Every figure on this page is counted from the records themselves at the moment the page is drawn. Nothing is rounded up or estimated.

This gate is new and its rolls are far from complete. The names here arrived through the service memorials that hold them; the civilians, who belong to no service, are being added. If someone is missing, they are missing because the work is not finished, not because they do not belong.

Stewardship

This is public record, gathered and kept by NeuraWeb Global Inc. It is free, permanent, carries no advertising, tracks nobody and requires no account. A family or an institution may claim a record and maintain it themselves; until one does, it is stewarded here.

Remembrance lives on sentinel.nw. Requiem is one of its gates.
