Rav Turai Shlomo Shamai served in the Israel Defense Forces. Shlomo served with the Infantry. Shlomo served in the War of Independence. Shlomo was 18 years old.

What Happened

בן יפה ונסים, נולד ביום ג' בחשוון תר"ץ (6.11.1929) בדמשק, בירת סוריה. בשנת 1931 עלה עם הוריו לארץ באורח בלתי-לגלי דרך כפר גלעדי. למד בבית-הספר "תחכמוני" בתל-אביב. משסיים את לימודיו החל לומד מסגרות בבית-החרושת "מכסף" בחולון. בהיותו בן שלוש-עשרה הצליח, על-ידי זיוף תעודתו, להצטרף לשורות הגדנ"ע והחי"ש של ה"הגנה" והיה מסור לאימונים. באותה תקופה היה פעיל גם בסקציה הימית של "הפועל". בתקופת שירותו בגדנ"ע שימש כסייר ועבר את הארץ לאורכה ולרוחבה. עם פרוץ מלחמת-העצמאות התנדב שלמה לשורות המגינים, שירת בחטיבת "גבעתי" ונשלח לקורס מפקדי-סיירים. זמן-מה היה בין מגיני כפר-הנוער בן שמן הנצור. אחר-כך הועבר לאזור תל-אביב והשתתף בטיהור הכפרים הערביים סלמה, יאזור, חיריה, סאקיה ותל-א-ריש. ביום ג' באייר תש"ח (12.5.1948), בעת מבצע "מכבי" לפריצת הדרך לירושלים, יצא כוח מחטיבת "גבעתי" במספר משוריינים להעביר תחמושת לכוחות "הראל" בגיזרה המזרחית. הכוח נתקל בשריוניות בריטיות ליד דיר-איוב וספג נפגעים. למרות האש הכבדה שניתכה על המכונית לא הפסיק שלמה את תצפיתו עד שנפגע מכדור בראשו ונהרג. נקבר בנען. ביום י"ג באב תש"י (27.7.1950) הועבר למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בנחלת יצחק.
