בן חנה ויהודה, נולד בשנת 1923 בעיר מקנס שבמרוקו. הוא למד ב"תלמוד-תורה" ובגיל צעיר החל לעבוד כמסגר-מכונן כדי לעזור למשפחתו הענייה. היה חובב ספורט ושחקן כדורגל. מנערותו שאף לעלות ארצה ובשנת 1946, בהיותו כבר נשוי ואב לארבעה ילדים, עבר עם המשפחה לאלג'יר, העפיל ארצה בספינה "שיבת ציון" שנתפסה בידי הבריטים ונשלח לקפריסין. בראשית פברואר 1948 עלה ארצה, הצטרף מיד ל"הגנה" ושירת בחטיבת "קריתי". ביום כ"ב בניסן תש"ח (1.5.1948), לקראת סיום הקרב על יפו, יצא לפעולת-חבלה על גבול תל-אביב-יפו ושם נפל. יעקב הובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בנחלת יצחק. אחיו גבריאל נפל כשמונה חודשים אחריו.
