Requiem aeternam dona eis

Nobody wakes up a hero.

A sailor asleep in his bunk. A woman at her desk on a high floor. A firefighter three years from his pension. A schoolteacher who volunteered for a seat. A man on a train, a child in a classroom, a nurse at the end of a long shift.

What the next few minutes asked of them was not in any of them when they woke. Or if it was, none of them knew it.

Some ran toward it. Some stayed with somebody who could not walk. Some had ninety seconds and some had ninety minutes, and what they did with that time is the whole of what we keep here.

This is a place for the people taken by days the world could not forget — and for the ones the same day is still taking, years later.

The days held here

This gate is new, and the world has given it far more days than it yet holds. If the person you are looking for is not here, they are not here yet — that is a gap in the work, never a judgement about who belongs.

Why this gate exists
