“The Los Angeles Police Department stands with our Jewish community as we enter the High Holy Days,” the agency said in a statement Wednesday. “We will have extra patrols and increased visibility at houses of worship, schools and cultural centers to ensure everyone can gather and worship safely.
“We remain in close contact with community leaders and security partners, and we ask the public to stay alert. If you see suspicious activity or have information about potential threats, please report it immediately.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department echoed the message Thursday, saying it remains “committed to safeguarding these important traditions and ensuring our community members feel secure as they gather in observance of the High Holy Days.”
“Heightened patrols and enhanced visibility will be in effect at religious, educational and cultural organizations throughout Los Angeles County to help ensure that the safety and security of all residents remain paramount.”

Rosh Hashana is a time for Jews to gather with family and their communities to reflect on the past year and the one ahead. Celebrants traditionally eat festive foods including apples dipped in honey, symbolizing hopes for a sweet new year.
The holiday ushers in the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of repentance and contemplation that culminates in Yom Kippur, Judaism’s most solemn and somber day.
Jewish tradition holds that during the High Holy Days, God records the fate of each person for the coming year in the Book of Life, which is sealed at the end of Yom Kippur.
