Driver killed after plunging 50 feet from LA overpass in horror crash

Add The California Post on Google A driver was killed in a brutal downtown Los Angeles crash early Friday morning as a car careened off Upper Grand Avenue and plunged about 50 feet to the street below, where it overturned.

A motorist was driving northbound on Upper Grand Ave around 2:30 a.m. when he veered off the roadway and overturned, the Los Angeles Police Department told The California Post. The car fell around 40 to 50 feet to Lower Grand Avenue.

Officials pronounced the driver, a black male in his 30s, dead at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle, police said. No other vehicles were involved.

Video footage from the scene showed the car, which appeared to be a black sedan, viciously mangled and overturned on its hood. There was heavy damage to the front of the vehicle.

A witness at the scene described what she heard as the car plummeted to the street below.

“I was at the ATM and I heard something go ‘boom,’ and I said that sounds like a car that fell down here,” the witness said, pointing to the street below. “And look, it was a car that fell down here. That’s crazy.”

When asked whether she had seen a car fall from Upper Grand Avenue before, she said, “Hell no.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department was on the scene and appeared to inspect the car before placing a white sheet on it.

Police are still investigating the crash. It is not known whether the driver was impaired.
