Turai Rishon Israel Arbitman served in the Israel Defense Forces. Israel served with the Infantry. Israel served in the War of Independence. Israel was 21 years old.

What Happened

בן מרים וצבי, נולד ביום ד' בשבט תרפ"ז (7.1.1927) בארץ-ישראל. נעוריו עברו עליו ברמת גן בקרב חברים רבים, שאהבוהו בזכות תכונות אופיו. הוא היה ותרן ונוח לבריות ותמיד עשה מאמצים להשכין שלום בין הנצים. התבלט בקומתו הגבוהה ושערו הבהיר. בראשית שנת 1948 התגייס ישראל לצבא והוצב בגדוד 33 של חטיבת "אלכסנדרוני". בעת מבצע "חורב" נערך מבצע "חיסול", שנועד לחסל את "כיס פלוג'ה" שבו היתה נצורה חטיבה מצרית. ההתקפה נערכה על אגפו המזרחי של ה"כיס", באזור עיראק אל-מנשיה. כוחות "אלכסנדרוני" פרצו לכפר מדרום והשתלטו על חלקו, אך הסתערותם על התל שמצפון לכפר נהדפה. בינתיים התאוששו המצרים ותקפו נגד ואילצו את כוחותינו לסגת. חלק מהכוח נשאר לכוד בתוך הכפר. בקרב זה, ביום כ"ו בכסלו תש"ח 28.12.1948)-27), נפל ישראל. לאחר הקרב קבר האויב את חללינו בקבר אחים מסומן בסביבות פאלוג'ה. שנה לאחר-מכן הועבר ארונו של ישראל אל בית-הקברות הצבאי בנחלת יצחק. זכרו הונצח בספר התורה על-שם גיבורי מלחמת-העצמאות.
