Turai Moshe Hofman served in the Israel Defense Forces. Moshe served with the Armored Corps. Moshe served in the War of Independence.

What Happened

בן קופל, נולד בשנת 1927 בעיר לודז' שבפולין. עם הכיבוש הנאצי הועברו בני משפחתו למחנה-השמדה ונספו שם, ואילו הוא עצמו התגלגל במחנות-כפייה שונים עד שהגיע למחנה מאוטהאוזן, אוסטריה, ושוחרר על-ידי הצבא האמריקני. היה נמוך-קומה ודל-בשר אולם חרוץ וזריז להפליא, ולאחר ש"אורט" הקימה בתי-ספר מקצועיים במחנות התמסר מיד ללימוד מקצוע, למד נהגות ומכונאות, וכעבור זמן מועט השתכר כדי קיומו, בלי להזדקק לתמיכה. "למזלי, לא הצליחו הנאצים להשניא עלי את העבודה והיא מוסיפה להיות תוכן חיי" - היה אומר. בשורת-הארץ הגיעה למחנות ועוררה כיסופים לעלייה, ואף-על-פי שלא השתתף באספות ולא שמע נאומים, כי התקשה להבין את המדובר בהם, היתה אוזנו קשובה לכל פריסת-שלום חיה מן הארץ. כשבאה הקריאה להתנדבות בימי מלחמת-העצמאות היה מן הראשונים שנענו לה. בראשית שנת 1948 נפרד מאחותו ומארוסתו ובדרך עקלקלות הגיע לאיטליה, שם קיבל הכשרה צבאית ראשונה. בדרך האוויר עלה לארץ, ומיד עם בואו התגייס לצבא הגנה לישראל. הוא השתייך לפלמ"ח ונלחם באויב בהרי-יהודה. השתתף בכיבוש לוד ורמלה ובקרבות בנגב. נפל ביום ה' בטבת תש"ט (6.1.1949) בקרב על צומת רפיח בעת מבצע "חורב". מצבה לזכרו הוקמה בבית-הקברות הצבאי בהר-הרצל בירושלים. החלל הינו מקל''ן- חלל שמקום קבורתו לא נודע.
