Add The New York Post on Google A heroic Amazon driver stopped a madman from slaughtering his wife with a hammer when he spotted him attacking her while delivering a package to their Minnesota home earlier this month, officials said.
The driver heard a woman’s horrified screams outside the couple’s front door in Wyoming, Minnesota on May 11 and saw a woman covered in blood and a man — identified as her husband James Alan Johnson, 72 — holding a hammer inside, KTSP reported.
The brave courier, who was not identified, busted into the home and demanded the would-be killer drop the hammer, according to court documents. The alleged wife attacker obliged and handed over the weapon to the Amazon driver, who called 911.
James Allan Johnson, 72, is accused of trying to kill his wife with a hammer. Police arrived at the scene and found the woman lying in a pool of blood on the living room floor, bleeding heavily from her head, arms and hands. Officers noted she had “large bloody indents that were consistent with being struck by a hammer several times,” according to a criminal complaint obtained by CBS News.
The victim told police that her husband Johnson had whacked her in the head with the hammer twice — and said she was only able to get him off of her after she kicked him in the crotch.
Johnson told police that the attack was fueled by financial issues, as the business where he works as a general manager is facing impending collapse, according to the complaint.
He allegedly claimed to cops that he plotted to kill his wife days before the hammer attack to save her from the looming crisis and the financial hardship of living off “significantly reduced” social security benefits.
He had planned to knock her unconscious before killing her, police say he confessed.
Johnson is charged with first-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
