Add The New York Post on Google A Tesla Cybertruck driver was caught on camera apparently asleep behind the wheel while cruising down a busy Bay Area highway in self-driving mode over the weekend.
Video sent to KRON4 showed the driver dozing off inside the futuristic pickup as it traveled along Highway 101 in Marin County around 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16.
The alarming footage is just the latest in a string of viral incidents involving Tesla drivers seemingly nodding off behind the wheel on Bay Area roads.
Similar videos have surfaced before, including footage posted by the outlet showing a driver asleep on Highway 4.
Despite Tesla’s advanced driving technology, the company’s guidelines state drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control of the vehicle at all times.
The California Highway Patrol also warned that sleeping behind the wheel—even in a vehicle equipped with autonomous or autopilot features—violates state law.
“Regardless of any special features a vehicle may possess, such as autopilot or fully autonomous capabilities, drivers are still responsible for the vehicle they are operating. If a driver is asleep behind the wheel, they are in violation of California’s basic speed law,” CHP said.
“It is unsafe to operate/drive a vehicle at any speed while asleep behind the wheel.”
The video comes as Tesla’s self-driving capabilities continue to face scrutiny amid ongoing debates over the safety of autonomous vehicle technology.
