A nightmare season for Trevor Story is turning even uglier.
The Red Sox shortstop is headed to the injured list with a strained groin, according to The Athletic.
Story, 33, reportedly has been battling tightness in his groin all season and sat out Friday’s 3-2 series-opening road loss in 10 innings to the Braves.

Following last year’s resurgent 3.8-fWAR season, Story is hitting a career-low .206 with a .244 on-base percentage and a career-worst .303 slugging percentage.
His .547 OPS is his lowest in his 11 seasons and is 0.262 points lower than his career .809 mark.
The groin has seemingly affected him when he’s been on the bases, with just four steals in as many attempts spanning 41 games.
He totaled 31 on 35 tries last year in 157 contests.
Story recently expressed optimism he would get on track.
It’s been that kind of season for Trevor Story. Getty Images “It’s tough to go through in the moment, but I have confidence that I can do it because I’ve done it before,” he told the Boston Herald. “Takes one game, takes one pitch. And I’m always optimistic about it. I’m not gonna sit here and pout about it. I’m not gonna sit here and feel sorry for myself.
Story has also hurt Boston in the field, committing six errors to go along with a minus-one defensive runs saved mark and a minus-two outs above average output, according to Fangraphs.
Boston is calling up Nick Sogard to fill his roster spot, per The Athletic, and Boston could turn to former Yankee infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa at shortstop or shift Marcelo Mayer from second base.
This injury is yet another for a struggling last-place Red Sox (18-26) team already without ace Garrett Crochet and star youngster Roman Anthony.
The Red Sox still have Story under contract for $25 million in 2027 and a $25 million team option or a $5 million buyout for 2028.
