An E-bike rider who took southern California cops on a high speed chase learned the hard way that there’s no escaping police when they deploy their eye in the sky drones.
The Redlands Police Department said the suspect — who has yet to be identified — was riding recklessly on an electric bike through the city, “running stop signs and treating the wrong side of the road like the ‘scenic route.’”
Police said when they tried to have a chat with the person, “the subject decided to hit the ‘electric gas’ and zip away.”
View this post on Instagram That’s when cops said they decided to deploy a creative high tech device to track the E-bike rider down, who was attempting to play “hide-and-seek” with them.
With the use of the department’s Mav-1DFR (Drone First Responder or DFR) program, cops said the DFR was able to make its first arrest.
Drone footage from the department, showed that, from 200 feet up, police were able to track the suspect as he tried to conceal the bike and hide in someone’s home.
“Our eye in the sky arrived in the area and wasn’t about to let this high-voltage pursuit end in a vanishing act,” the department’s post read.
“Mav-1 tracked the subject as he wound through streets and eventually ducked into a residence to hide.”
The drone footage also showed cops surrounding the house and, as the department put it, convincing “the subject that it was time to come outside and face the music.”
The suspect was arrested, taken into custody and the E-bike was sent to the tow yard, the police said.
“**Pro-tip:** If you’re going to evade the law, maybe don’t do it in a city that has the coolest drones responding from above. We’re always looking out for you, Redlands—sometimes from a very high perspective,” the department’s post concluded.
