Add The California Post on Google Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers handed the Super Bowl favorite Rams a 27-7 beatdown on Thursday.
San Francisco’s commanding victory comes after an offseason filled with drama for the 49ers. But it also included a multiyear contract extension for Shanahan, who is now set to be the head coach of the 49ers for several years, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
Shanahan was previously believed to be signed through the 2027 season, but he quietly signed an extension in the offseason. The terms of the deal haven’t been revealed.
The 46-year-old was hired by the organization in February 2017 and began his 10th season with the 49ers this year. Shanahan has led the team to two Super Bowl appearances (both losses to the Chiefs) and four NFC Championship berths.
Shanahan has an 83-67 record as the 49ers head coach and has won 10-plus games in a season five times.
At the start of training camp, general manager John Lynch revealed Shanahan was involved in a horrific car accident where he sustained several injuries. The July 14 car crash near his home in Palo Alto, Calif. left him with three broken ribs and a broken left hand.
Shanahan was limited at the start of training camp, where assistant head coach Chris Foerster was given the responsibility of leading practice this summer.
Shanahan needs only two more games to tie Bill Walsh for most games coached with the 49ers franchise. He is regarded as one of the top coaches in the NFL, but fans are still waiting for his first Super Bowl win.
Thursday’s performance against the Rams was a good start for the 49ers in 2026.
