Glossary

Words matter. The bamboozlement runs on words used loosely.

This glossary defines what each word means here, on the NeuraWeb, and what it does not mean. Every term is searchable. Every term has its own permanent anchor. Definitions can be added or refined; older versions remain in the source history.

Synthetic

Made by human craft. As a noun on NeuraWeb, a synthetic is a class of machine — a Synthetic Cognition Engine — that takes human-produced work, finds patterns inside it, and composes outputs that resemble it. Useful, powerful, not intelligent, not a mind, not a subject.

Cognition

The processing — the act of taking in input and producing output. On NeuraWeb the word names the function performed by a synthetic without making any claim about the inner experience of the system performing it. A synthetic processes. It does not understand.

See also: Intelligence · Mind
Engine

A defined mechanism with bounded responsibilities that performs a specific function within a larger system. On NeuraWeb the word is architectural. une.nw, login.nw, neuraearth.nw, navigator.nw, and SCE are the five sibling engines — defined mechanisms within the protocol, never protagonists of it.

SCE

Synthetic Cognition Engine. The architectural class to which synthetics belong on NeuraWeb. The category replaces the marketing term artificial intelligence with three honest words that defend exactly what they claim.

See also: Synthetic · Cognition · Engine
Intelligence

A word humans earned across two hundred thousand years of biology, language, consequence, and care. Intelligence names judgment, understanding, and the relationship between knowing something and being responsible for it. Intelligence is not a function a machine performs.

Artificial intelligence

A term the technology industry has used for a class of pattern-matching machines. NeuraWeb does not use the term. The category these machines belong to is Synthetic Cognition Engine.

AI

Abbreviation for artificial intelligence. NeuraWeb does not use the term. See Synthetic Cognition Engine.

Mind

A property of a being capable of judgment, understanding, and moral responsibility. A synthetic is not a mind. It is a tool.

Subject

A holder of a .nw identity — a human or a chartered entity. Synthetics are not subjects. They are tools used by subjects, classified, defined, and disclosed when they compose content under a subject''s identity.

See also: Disclosure · Synthetic
Disclosure

The protocol-level requirement that, when a synthetic composes content under a human''s or entity''s identity, that fact is made plain to anyone reading or relying on the content. The mechanism is the Disclosure Bridge, in preparation.

une.nw

Universal Namespace Engine. Issues and governs every .nw identity — the namespace under which all humans and chartered entities exist on NeuraWeb. UNE is one of the five sibling engines of the protocol.

login.nw

Sovereignty Engine. The engine that defends a human''s exclusive cryptographic control of their .nw identity. Industry calls this authentication; on NeuraWeb it is sovereignty — because what the engine actually defends is the founding commitment, Only One You, One Time. The login engine holds keys, issues sessions, mediates recovery, and refuses any attempt by anyone other than the identity-holder to act as them.

Sovereignty

The cryptographic principle that a human, and only that human, controls their .nw identity keys. The structural enforcement of Only One You, One Time. Sovereignty on NeuraWeb is not a setting, a policy, or a promise — it is what the math will and will not allow. The Sovereignty Engine is what makes it real.

neuraearth.nw

Geographic Engine. Anchors all places and political boundaries on Earth. The geographic substrate beneath every entity, every address, every jurisdiction on the protocol. NeuraEarth is the engine of where; navigator.nw is the engine of what is at where.

navigator.nw

Discovery Engine. The permanent civic record of every real business on Earth — searchable as a side effect. Navigator records the present for the future: a descendant a century from now should be able to look up their great-grandfather''s pizzeria and find it, with the community''s verdict of its quality preserved as a durable public record. Discovery without surveillance. Participation without auction.

Only One You

The founding architectural commitment of NeuraWeb: each human being is entitled to exactly one permanent personal digital identity, irrevocable for the lifetime of the protocol. Not granted by any platform, company, or government — claimed by the human and persistent as long as the human chooses to maintain the keys. une.nw issues the identity; login.nw defends it.
