Rav Samal Rishon Yosef Leibovitch served in the Israel Defense Forces. Yosef served with the General Service Corps. Yosef was 57 years old.
בן שבתאי וחנה. נולד ביום ה' בסיון תר"ס (2.6.1900) בצ'כוסלובקיה. גדל באוירה מסורתית והתחנך ברוח זו. לא זו בלבד שסיים את לימודיו בבית-ספר תיכון אלא אף הגה בתורה והיה תלמידו המובהק של הרב יהודה גרינוולד ז"ל (אב בית-דין בקהילת סטמר), אשר הסמיכו להוראה. היה ציוני נלהב וחבר פעיל בתנועת "הפועל המזרחי", אף השתתף כציר-מפלגתו בכמה קונגרסים ציוניים. השתתף במלחמת-העולם הראשונה. בימי מלחמת-העולם השניה היה במחנה-ריכוז, וכתום המלחמה נתן לבו להקים את הכל מחדש ולהחזיר את הנוער לרוח הציונות והיהדות. בעלותו לארץ בשנת 1949 התישב עם משפחתו בכפר אזור, אשר בו הקים בית-ספר של "המזרחי" ואף ייסד בית-כנסת. אף כי היה למעלה מגיל-הגיוס הצטרף לצה"ל באפריל 1953. שירת שירות סדיר ולאחר-מכן הצטרף לצבא-הקבע. ביום י' באדר תשי"ח (1.3.1958) נפטר והובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בקרית-שאול.
