Turai Shmuel Yerushalmi served in the Israel Defense Forces. Shmuel served with the Infantry. Shmuel served in the War of Independence. Shmuel was 30 years old.

What Happened

בן רבקה ויוסף-יעקב, נולד ביום ה' בניסן תרע"ח (18.3.1918) בירושלים. לאחר שסיים בית-ספר יסודי החל לעבוד כשרברב. מגיל צעיר היה חבר ב"הגנה" ומן הראשונים לכל מעשה התנדבות לטובת עיר-מולדתו אשר על שמה נקרא. הקים משפחה ופירנסה בכבוד. במלחמת-העצמאות התגייס שמואל והצטרף אל מגיני העיר הנצורה והצטיין בעמידתו בכל סכנה. שעות מספר לפני נופלו שהה במקרה בבית, ובאותה שעה נערכה הפגזה קשה ביותר על המקום. בני המשפחה ניסו לעצור אותו בבית, אך הוא השיב: "מקומי לא במקלט כי אם בעמדה". יצא ולא חזר. שמואל נהרג על משמרתו בבית-ישראל, מול שייח'-ג'ראח, ביום כ"א באייר תש"ח (30.5.1948), השני מבני המשפחה שנפל במלחמת-העצמאות: אחיו הצעיר מרדכי קדם לו במות-גיבורים עם השיירה שניסתה לפרוץ את הדרך לקיבוץ יחיעם הנצור. נקבר בשייח'-באדר א'. הניח אישה, פנינה, וילד רך. האם השכולה נפטרה מצער ושברון-לב לאחר מותם. ביום כ"ח באלול תש"י (10.9.1950) הובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בהר- הרצל בירושלים.
