This Day in History: March 1 - From Yellowstone to the Peace Corps

March 1 marks the founding of Yellowstone, the Peace Corps, Chopin's birthday, and more pivotal moments in history.

March 1 has witnessed some of the most consequential moments in American and world history. From the birth of the national park system to the founding of the Peace Corps, this date has shaped the world we live in today.

1872: Yellowstone Becomes the World's First National Park

On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law, establishing the world's first national park. The act set aside more than two million acres in the Wyoming and Montana territories, preserving the region's geysers, hot springs, and wildlife for public enjoyment. The decision was instrumental in establishing the principle of federal land protection on a massive scale, though it also forced many Native peoples from land they had inhabited for thousands of years.

1781: The Articles of Confederation Are Ratified

After more than three years of debate among the original thirteen states, the Articles of Confederation were finally ratified on March 1, 1781. The document served as the first constitution of the United States, establishing a loose confederation of sovereign states with a weak central government. Its shortcomings would eventually lead to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the creation of the U.S. Constitution.

1961: JFK Establishes the Peace Corps

President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order 10924 on March 1, 1961, creating the Peace Corps as a new agency within the Department of State. The program would go on to send tens of thousands of American volunteers to developing nations around the world, providing assistance in education, healthcare, and economic development. More than 240,000 Americans have served in the Peace Corps since its founding.

1810: Frederic Chopin Is Born

The legendary Polish composer and pianist Frederic Chopin was born on March 1, 1810. Widely regarded as one of the greatest composers for the piano, Chopin's works remain central to the classical repertoire. His nocturnes, preludes, and polonaises are celebrated for their emotional depth and technical brilliance.

Other Notable March 1 Events

In 1932, the infant son of aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped from the family's New Jersey home in what became known as "the crime of the century." In 1953, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin suffered the stroke that would claim his life four days later. In 1954, Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire from the gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives, injuring five members of Congress. And in 1998, James Cameron's Titanic became the first film to gross one billion dollars worldwide.
