Think tank report suggests refuelling hubs at port, airport and industrial areas, with focus on heavy vehicles to boost emissions cuts
2-MIN READ2-MIN ListenTheodora YuPublished: 8:32pm, 19 May 2026Updated: 8:35pm, 19 May 2026Hong Kong should prioritise hydrogen adoption and related services to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, a think tank report has said, including setting up refuelling stations for heavy vehicles in container terminals and industrial areas.
The policy research report, released on Tuesday by Our Hong Kong Foundation, set out nine recommendations to advance hydrogen use in the city, covering vehicle uptake, testing facilities, supply and governance.
It was unveiled at the three-day International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.
Speaking at the launch, the think tank’s president, Jane Lee Ching-yee, said the city should seize opportunities in emerging industries and establish a distinct role in the country’s broader hydrogen energy strategy.
“The next few years will be a critical juncture for Hong Kong’s hydrogen development to transition from pilot projects to widespread adoption,” Lee said.
“Hong Kong must foster close collaboration among the public, government, business, academic and research sectors, to integrate the city into the mainland’s overarching energy strategy and find Hong Kong’s own unique positioning.”
