Tesla (TSLA:NASDAQ) sold more China-made cars in September, with sales up 5% from a year earlier, according to the China Passenger Car Association. That follows a 3.6% gain in August.

The company delivered 95,366 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from its Shanghai factory. A year ago, that number was 90,812.

These figures include exports to Europe, Asia Pacific and Canada. It was the 11th straight month of year-over-year gains.

The rebound in Europe is a key tailwind. Tesla's new car registrations rose across several European markets last month.

For the full Q3, Shanghai-built sales grew 13.7% from last year, based on Reuters calculations.

Global numbers tell a slightly different story. Tesla's deliveries fell 2.1% from Q3 last year.

But last year's Q3 was an all-time high, so that is a tough comparison.

Tesla is also on track to return to full-year growth after two years of declines.

China is the world's largest EV auto market, and competition there is intense. Tesla is offering discounts to keep sales moving through the end of October.

Buyers get 7,000 yuan off the final payment on select Model Y versions and get 5,000 yuan off every Model 3 version.

Tesla's sales trend is a good sign, as eleven months of growth in China suggests demand is holding up.

Tesla stock also benefits when Europe recovers, since Shanghai ships cars there.

The July earnings call adds more context. Management said it ended Q2 with its largest order backlog since 2023.

It also said production growth will be limited by its supply chain, including batteries and electronic components.

There are risks to watch. Discounts can squeeze profits. In Q2, automotive margins excluding regulatory credits fell from 19.2% to 16.3%.

Management also said interest rates and commodity prices are adding to costs.

On the call, Elon Musk pointed to robotaxi, Optimus and energy storage as big parts of the plan.

Capital spending is set to top $25 billion this year. That is why Tesla stock can move on both monthly sales data and longer-term bets.
