CEO Satya Nadella and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are expected to introduce the Surface Laptop Ultra at a San Francisco event Wednesday. The machine will use Nvidia's RTX Spark chips and is designed to handle AI agents locally rather than sending every task to the cloud.

That could have meaningful economics for Microsoft.

Running demanding AI workloads inside Azure requires expensive data centers, chips and electricity. Moving some of that computing onto customer-owned Windows machines could reduce infrastructure pressure while strengthening Microsoft's position in business PCs.

For Nvidia, the opportunity is different. A successful push into Windows computers could give the chipmaker another route into a market traditionally dominated by Intel and AMD. Cost may be the obstacle.

Memory prices have risen sharply enough that Nvidia recently increased the price of its DGX Spark AI desktop by about 75% to $6,950. Analysts cited in the report said similar pressures are affecting both Microsoft and Apple's local AI ambitions.

The next catalyst comes at Wednesday's event, where investors will be watching the Surface Laptop Ultra's pricing, capabilities and how Microsoft plans to make local AI practical for mainstream customers.
