Terry Bradshaw suggests Patriots should bench Drake Maye before comeback win over Bills

Make New York Post a Preferred Source Terry Bradshaw offered a solution Sunday for the Patriots to consider if Drake Maye continues to struggle.

Maye led New England to a Super Bowl appearance last year in his second NFL season, but he came into this week with just one touchdown pass and six interceptions during the Pats’ 1-2 start.

“Sometimes you get into such a rut that you lose your confidence, which is what’s happening. Sometimes, you have to bench ’em,” Bradshaw said Sunday on the Fox pregame show. “You just sit him down.

“Doesn’t mean he’s not your No. 1. You just sit him down and take that focus…That’s how you keep going forward.”

Drake Maye (10) continues to struggle while at quarterback for the New England Patriots. Getty Images Fellow panelist and Giants legend Michael Strahan argued “that’s hard” because Maye was an MVP candidate last season while taking the team to the Super Bowl before losing to the Seahawks, adding it would be “very hard to bench him at this point.”

The third-year quarterback, who entered Week 4 with one touchdown and six interceptions, had an up-and-down effort against the Bills, but ultimately played well enough when it mattered to engineer a late comeback victory 29-26.

Maye finished the game going 22-for-37 and recording 269 passing yards with three touchdowns to one interception.

Terry Bradshaw suggests that Drake Maye’s performances this season warrants a benching from the Patriots. Getty Images While trailing 26-21, Maye connected with Efton Chism III to complete an eight-play, 73-yard drive with 1:50 to go, giving New England the lead, which extended to 29-26 following a two-point conversion from Maye to Rhamondre Stevenson.

Maye is backed up by former Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito, who made eight starts for them in 2023 and 2024.

Top receiving target A.J, Brown also has been sidelined for New England with a sprained ankle suffered in the season opener.
