Make California Post a Preferred Source Nearly a month after surviving a mail truck hit-and-run, Pasadena’s famous white peacock just retired to a private ranch.
The white peacock named Sugar was relocated to a private ranch in Northern California after recovering from his injuries incurred from a U.S. Postal Service worker in August.
The beloved animal was allegedly chased down and beaten by a mailman that left the bird writhing on the ground. Video in a Pasadena neighborhood showed the mailman continuously going after the bird rather than just chasing it away.
The postal worker also repeatedly swung a stick at it.
“After carefully considering what would be best for his long-term wellbeing, our wildlife experts determined that relocation would offer him the best quality of life and help reduce the risk of future negative encounters given the significant public attention surrounding his case,” Pasadena Humane announced on Wednesday.
“We know so many of you have been following Sugar’s story and rooting for his recovery, and we’re incredibly grateful for the care and concern you’ve shown him,” they also said.

Following the incident in August, local residents were furious. “Did you report the mailman? What an awful human!!” one person commented in a Facebook post.
“Pure evil. I hope that mailman gets fired,” another person even said.
Sugar was sent over to the Pasadena Humane Society, an animal shelter, for treatment following the attack. Veterinarians examined him and found areas of swelling and several minor wounds, but X-rays showed no bones were broken.
The Pasadena Humane Society was founded in 1903 and works as a nonprofit animal welfare organization. While it is based in Pasadena, the group provides services to other nearby cities as well.
An investigation into the event was completed and the group referred the case to the District Attorney for “review and consideration of formal charges.”
