Add The New York Post on Google Connecticut Sun center Brittney Griner’s estranged wife Cherelle responded to her July 30 divorce filing in Fulton County (Ga.) after eight years of marriage, according to TMZ.
Cherelle, a 34-year-old lawyer, is asking the court to award her financial support and explained that there is a “substantial disparity” in income — and she reportedly is “unable to meet her reasonable financial needs on a monthly basis without continued support.”
Brittney signed a one-year, $1.19 million maximum contract with the Sun for the 2026 season, according to Spotrac.
Cherelle listed the separation date as July 24, 2026, as did Brittney in her filing, and said the marriage is “irretrievably broken with no hope for reconciliation.”
She requested joint legal custody of their 2-year-old son, Bash Griner, and wants the court to make a ruling on physical custody and parenting time based on the best interests of the child.
Brittney filed for divorce from Cherelle in Fulton County in July 30, and cited the marriage as “irretrievably broken,” court records showed, per Page Six.
A month prior, Cherelle supported Brittney at a Sun game and pair shared a kiss after Connecticut’s win over the Sky at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville on June 22.
The two married in June 2018 after meeting as students at Baylor University — where Brittney helped the Bears win a NCAA national championship in 2012, completing a historic 40-0 undefeated season.
Cherelle fought for Brittney’s release after she was taken into custody by Russian officials for carrying a vape pen containing hash oil in Feb. 2022.
Brittney was found guilty on drug-related charges in Russia, where marijuana is illegal, and received a nine-year sentence.
She was released 10 months after being detained through a prisoner swap for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in December 2022.
Brittney was ordered to pay child support to her ex-wife, former WNBA player Glory Johnson, in April 2016 after Johnson gave birth to their twin daughters, Ava Simone and Solei Diem, in October 2015.
The WNBA champ filed an annulment of their marriage after 28 days in 2015.
