Roger Goodell, in attendance for the league’s first regular season game in Australia, donned a kangaroo coat while joining Netflix’s pregame show for the Rams-49ers clash.
Host Elle Duncan reminded Goodell that he previously wore Santa Claus garb while on the streaming giant’s program. So, to fit the scene in Australia, Duncan said the crew had a new costume “to represent the culture. This is our kangaroo coat that the MVP of today’s game will be wearing. You get to christen it.”
Goodell, wearing the coat — with Netflix and NFL branding — that had a kangaroo-head hood, turned to the crowd outside Melbourne Cricket Ground and was met with plenty of cheers (though there were plenty of critics on social media).
Netflix first began streaming NFL games on Christmas Day 2024, and has since broadcasted contests in the next two seasons, with Thursday night’s contest being the first of 2026.
Netflix has a sizable slate this year, adding the first-ever Thanksgiving Eve game on Nov. 25 between the Packers and Rams. The platform will broadcast two more games on Christmas and a to-be-announced Week 18 matchup.

Goodell, who recently inked an extension through 2030, told CNBC on Thursday that the NFL is trying to adapt its coverage to an ever-changing and growing market. In addition to Netflix’s slate of games, Amazon’s Prime Video will stream “Thursday Night Football” again this season. Peacock also will have an exclusive game in Week 17.
“The world is changing for our partners,” Goodell said. “It’s changing for us. It’s changing for fans. Our fans are moving to other platforms. I think one of the challenges for us is to look at the changes, evaluate what’s working, what’s not, what we think is going to work beyond those option dates and the partners that can bring the greatest opportunity to reach those fans on a global basis.
“We’ve never looked at it that way until recently.”
