If you know anything at all about this annual exhibition — stand clear; the NFL doesn’t like when you use that word “exhibition,” so you may soon join me on a Watch List — you know it was born in the summer of 1969 as a seminal civic event.
That was the weekend of Woodstock, and the battle for New York City was actually fought in New Haven, Conn., and the Jets beat the Giants 37-14 in a game both teams took very, very seriously.
There were other notable clashes — 50 years ago this month came the last NFL game ever played at Yankee Stadium, the Giants winning a 16-14 snooze-fest that was delayed two days by Hurricane Bell, so it was played on a Wednesday.
Mostly, the teams just hope to escape this last weekend of pretend games unscathed, since the lasting memories of the more recent renewals generally revolve around devastating injury. Mark Sanchez and Chad Pennington had their Jets careers altered in this game. Jason Sehorn and Osi Umenyiora both cost themselves entire Giants seasons thanks to bad luck in the game.
