It describes the volatile nature of watching one of Spieth’s rounds — a roller-coaster-ride combo platter featuring electric birdie runs, wild par saves from off the planet and mind-numbing gaffes leading to big numbers.

Never has that phrase been more apt than in the 2017 British Open at Royal Birkdale, where golf’s oldest major will be played this week for the first time since then.

It was in 2017 at Birkdale where Spieth won the British Open — but only after putting himself and his ardent followers through hell.
