What Happened

בן הנדל וחיים-משה, נולד בשנת 1924 בעיירה לובראניץ, פולין. היה בוגר בית-ספר עממי ולמד בבית-ספר מקצועי. מילדותו היה חבר בתנועת בית"ר. עם כיבוש פולין על-ידי הגרמנים נכלא במחנה-השמדה וניצל בנס. אחרי שחרור אירופה מעול הנאצים הצטרף לקבוצת-הכשרה בבלגיה, עבר לצרפת הדרומית וחיכה לעלייה. שמחה הגיע לארץ ביום 1.7.1946 באוניית-המעפילים "ביריה" והשתקע בחדרה, שם עבד כצבע. שניים היו הרגשות שפיעמוהו: מסירות אין-קץ לארץ ונכונות לכל קורבן שיידרש ואהבה למשפחה שניצלה ושאף להעלותה ארצה. שמחה היה חבר הארגון הצבאי הלאומי ובפברואר 1948 הצטרף לשורות הלוחמים בחטיבת "אלכסנדרוני". הוא השתתף במבצע "דני" ונפל ליד מגדל צדק בקרב עם העיראקים ביום ה' בתמוז תש"ח (12.7.1948). הובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בנתניה.
