בן שולמית ולייזר-נתן, נולד ביום כ' בטבת תרפ"ה (16.1.1925) באמסטרדם, הולנד, אח לשלוש אחיות ושלושה אחים. מנעוריו היה מפעילי התנועה הציונית. בארץ הולדתו היה מדריך בתנועת נוער לאומית. בזמן מלחמת-העולם השנייה הגיע אסף לשוויץ ושם הכיר את אדיט ונשאה לאישה. בשנת 1945 עלתה המשפחה לארץ והתיישבה ברמת גן. ובקיץ 1946 נולדה בתו שולמית. לאחר עלותו ארצה הצטרף לארגון ה"הגנה" וגם כאן היה מהחברים הפעילים. אסף נטל חלק פעיל באימונים, בשמירות וכן שימש כקשר ביחידה. לפרנסת המשפחה עבד אסף כדפס בדפוס "הארץ" - תפקיד שנחשב בזמנו חיוני, כיוון שבדפוס זה הודפסו גם דברים אחרים פרט לעיתון. ביום ט' באייר תש"ח (18.5.1948) נהרג אסף בעת הפצצת מטוסי אויב על תל-אביב. הוא הובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בנחלת יצחק.
