ביום ז' במרחשוון התש"ט (9 בנובמבר 1948), בקרב על הכפר עִירָאק סוּיְדַאן, נפצע טוראי סימן־טוב גנה ז"ל קשה בשתי רגליו (שנקטעו לאחר מכן) מפגז תותח שפגע בזַחלָ"ם שנהג. כן נפצעו ברגליהם שלושת אנשי הצוות האחרים. הזַחלָ"ם הוּצא מן הפעולה ונעצר בשְׂדֵה הקרב. לאחר שגם זַחלָ"ם שני נפגע בפגז של תותח, החלה היחידה לסגת. על אף מצבו הקשה פתח טוראי סימן־טוב גנה ז"ל בחיפוי על הנסוגים בעזרת המַקלע שבזַחלָ"ם, ובכך אִפשר ליחידה על פצועיה להגיע עד הזַחלָ"מים. הוא עצמו נשאר עם הפצועים בתוך הזַחלָ"ם בשְׂדֵה הקרב במשך שש שעות. בלי שים לב למצבו הקשה הגיש לחבריו עזרה ראשונה והִשׁקה אותם מים. לאחר ניסיונות אחדים עלה בידו להתקשר באמצעות מכשיר הקשר שבזַחלָ"ם עם יחידתו, להודיע על מקום הימצאו ולבקש עזרה. התנהגות אמיצה זו הצילה אותו ואת חיי חבריו.
