Turai Shlomo Mendel served in the Israel Defense Forces. Shlomo served with the Armored Corps. Shlomo served in the War of Independence.

What Happened

בן שרה ובן-ציון, נולד בשנת 1924 באחת הקהילות היהודיות אשר בצ'כוסלובקיה ובשנת 1945 העפיל לארץ לאחר שהצליח לעבור בשלום את אימי השואה, וגורלו היה כגורל כל המעונים והניצולים בני גילו. עם בואו לארץ הצטרף ל"הגנה", התגורר עם אישתו בשכונת קרית יוסף בגבעתיים ועבד במקצועו כנגר. שלמה היה בעל-מלאכה מצוין ובטוח בעתידו בארץ, בה אמר לבנות חייו מחדש. בתחילת מלחמת-העצמאות שירת בחטיבת "הראל" והשתתף בקרב על הקסטל. לקראת סוף אפריל 1948 נערך בגיזרת ירושלים מבצע "יבוסי", שנועד ליצור רצף טריטוריאלי עברי בתוך העיר ובין ירושלים ליישובים שבצפונה. לצורך המבצע הועברה חטיבת "הראל" לירושלים ובליל 22-23 באפריל יצאו כוחותיה לתקוף את שועפת, בית-איכסא ונבי-סמואל. תנועת הכוח לנבי-סמואל ארכה זמן רב וההסתערות החלה עם שחר. נוכח אש האויב נאלץ הכוח לסגת ובנסיגה הקשה לאור היום היו נפגעים רבים. בקרב זה נפל, ביום י"ד בניסן תש"ח (23.4.1948). הובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בקרית ענבים.
