Turai Avner Zilberman served in the Israel Defense Forces. Avner served with the Armored Corps. Avner served in the War of Independence. Avner was 19 years old.

What Happened

בן רבקה ומנחם-מנדל, נולד ביום ב' בחשוון תרפ"ט (16.10.1928) בתל-אביב. למד ב"תלמוד-תורה" של חרדים ואחר-כך ב"ישיבה" של הרב עמיאל בתל-אביב. עוד בשבתו על ספסל ה"ישיבה" הצטרף למחתרת האצ"ל והתמחה בתעשיית הנשק. הוא הצטיין באומץ לב ובדריכות מתמדת לפעולה נועזת. היה חם-מזג, ואף בשעת מחלה לא אבה לנוח, כל עוד לא גורש האויב. "לא ניתן להם לעשות לנו את שעשו לאחינו באירופה" - אמר. לאחרונה הצטרף ל"הגנה" והתנדב לפלמ"ח. הואיל והיה מומחה לכלי-נשק נשלח מעמדה לעמדה, כדי לעזור ולתקן את הנשק הטעון תיקון. לקראת סוף אפריל 1948 נערך בגזרת ירושלים מבצע "יבוסי", שנועד ליצור רצף טריטוריאלי עברי בתוך העיר ובין ירושלים ליישובים שבצפונה. לצורך המבצע הועברה חטיבת "הראל" לירושלים ובליל 22-23 באפריל יצאו כוחותיה לתקוף את שועפת, בית-איכסא ונבי-סמואל. תנועת הכוח לנבי-סמואל ארכה זמן רב וההסתערות החלה עם שחר. נוכח אש האויב נאלץ הכוח לסגת ובנסיגה הקשה לאור היום היו נפגעים רבים. בקרב זה נפל ביום י"ד בניסן תש"ח (22.4.1948) והובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בקרית ענבים.
