What Happened

בן אסתר ואליהו, נולד ביום י' באלול תרפ"ב (3.9.1922) בירושלים, נצר למשפחה ותיקה בארץ. שאול חונך ברוח הדת והמסורת אולם המצב החומרי הדחוק בבית הוריו אילצהו להתחיל בחיי עבודה מיד לאחר שסיים את חוק לימודיו בבית-הספר היסודי לבנים. הוא למד את מלאכת הסיתות ובעבודה זו מצא את מחייתו. במשך תקופה ממושכת היה המפרנס היחידי של הוריו ואחיו ועמד להם בשעת דחקם. בתחילת מלחמת-העצמאות, עם הינתן צו הגיוס, התייצב בשורות הלוחמים והיה בין מגיני ירושלים. בניסיון לכיבוש העיר העתיקה התנדב לפעולה במוצררה. במשך שלושה ימים לחם בחירוף-נפש יחד עם חבריו ונשאר בין היחידים שחזרו מקרב זה. אחר-כך נשלח למשלט מלחה בהרי ירושלים. ביום י"ב באב תש"ח (17.8.1948), לאחר שעות-שמירה רבות, נפל בשעת מנוחתו בהיפגעו מאחד הפגזים שהאויב המטיר על המשלט. ברגעיו האחרונים אמר: "טוב לחיות בעד ארצנו, אבל טוב גם למות בעד גאולתה וחירותה". נקבר בשייח'- באדר א'. ביום י"ז באלול תש"י (30.8.1950) הועבר למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בהר- הרצל בירושלים.
