Turai Avraham-Albert Amitai served in the Israel Defense Forces. Avraham-Albert served with the Armored Corps. Avraham-Albert served in the War of Independence. Avraham-Albert was 24 years old.

What Happened

בן צפורה ואהרן, נולד ביום ד' באייר תרפ"ד (8.5.1924) בניו-יורק, ארצות-הברית. בשנת 1930, בהיותו בן שש, עלה עם הוריו לארץ. את לימודיו התחיל בתל-אביב ומשעברו הוריו לכפר גן-חיים, ליד כפר סבא, סיים שם את בית-הספר. שנה נוספת עבד בחקלאות כדי להכשיר עצמו להתיישבות. בינתיים הגיע תורו להתגייס לצבא האמריקני, אך הוא עמד על דעתו לשרת כנוטר בארץ. שלוש שנים היה נוטר, ובשנת 1946 הצטרף לקיבוץ "אילת" ועבר עם חבריו להתיישבות בשובל, בנגב הצפוני. מטעם הקיבוץ גויס לחטיבת "גבעתי", "הנגב" ולחיל השריון. בליל 2-3 ביוני 1948, במסגרת מבצע "פלשת", תקפו כוחות "גבעתי" ו"הנגב" את המערך המצרי ליד גשר אשדוד (גשר "עד הלום" כיום). ההסתערות נבלמה באש כבדה של האויב והכוחות נאלצו לסגת. ההתקפה נכשלה אמנם, אך אילצה את המצרים להיערך במקום ובלמה את התקדמותם צפונה. בקרב זה נפל ביום כ"ו באייר תש"ח (4.6.1948). תוך כדי הוצאת פצוע משדה-הקרב נפצע קשה. הוא הרגיש כי רגעיו ספורים, אך כל דאגתו היתה לנשק שבידו ושאל את מפקדו: "מה לעשות ברימונים שלי?" קיבוצו הוציא חוברת לזכרו. ביום ט"ו במרחשון תש"י (7.11.1949) הועבר למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בנחלת יצחק.
