Staff Sergeant, United States Army, retired after fifteen years.
He was educated at J. D. Thompson High School in Alexandria City, Alabama, began his military service in 1965, and took an associate's degree in accounting at Montgomery College in Maryland in 1970.
His family chose a poem for him which begins: do not grieve for me, for now I am free.

His wife Martha, his children Kelly and Daniel, his granddaughter Kayla, and his three sisters and six brothers.
