Synchronet
OPEN SOURCE1991–2026Digital Dynamics
A PC board from 1991 that went free and then open source, and now answers telnet for boards of every kind, PETSCII included.
The story
Synchronet was written by Rob Swindell and sold from 1992. It was early with things boards later took for granted: offline mail packets in 1992, and graphics in 1993. In 1997 it went free, and in 2000 version 3 moved to 32-bit and an open-source licence.
Today it runs on Windows, Linux and the BSDs, answers telnet and SSH, and can speak PETSCII to callers on a 64 or 128. It is still being released, and it is the fourth most common package on our list.
