RIGHTS UNKNOWN1988New Image Software

The most-run board on our list. A C64 BBS that began as the upgrade to C-Net 12 and is still being worked on.

The story

Image BBS came from the two programmers who had written C-Net 12.0, Don Gladden and Ray Kelm. They had an upgrade to C-Net in hand, reworked it into a program of their own, and released it as Image 1.0 in November 1988 under the New Image Software name.

The early releases were rocky. Version 1.1 came out in February 1989 and was withdrawn over a bug with IEEE drives, and 1.2 that November was close to a rewrite. CMD's hard drives and RAMLink made big boards possible on a C64, and a patched 1.2a was built to use them. For years Image was the board to run if you wanted lots of message bases, lots of files and plug-in modules on one machine.

Version 2.0 stalled in the late 1990s and was only finished in December 2018. Work on 3.0 started the same month, with the full source rebuilt, and Image is the package more boards on our list run than any other. It is given away free by the people who look after it, but it carries a copyright notice and no licence, so we tell its story here and leave the disks to them.
