C*Base

OPEN SOURCEC*Base

A C64 board written in compiled BASIC with machine-code help, known for networking its message bases. Now open source.

The story

C*Base was written by Gunther Birznieks in BASIC 2.0, compiled with Blitz! and sped up with machine-code routines where BASIC was too slow. That mix made it easy for sysops to change and hard to break, and it spread through the C64 board scene.

Version 3.1 added something few C64 boards had: networked message bases, so boards could swap posts with each other. Looking after it passed from Birznieks to Jerome Yoner and then to David Weinehall, who holds it today and re-released it as open source. The 3.3 releases are current, and C*Base is the third most common package on our list.
