AmiExpress
OPEN SOURCE1992–2024Synthetic Technologies
The Amiga board of the scene. The original was sold; the rewrite that boards run today is open source.
The story
AmiExpress was written by Michael Thomas and first sold in 1992. It became the board of the Amiga scene: fast, built for many lines at once, and easy to extend with doors. The rights passed to LightSpeed Technologies, whose AmiExpress Professional 4.x was the last of the commercial line. A planned successor never shipped.
In the 2020s Darren Coles rewrote AmiExpress from the ground up, with the blessing of the last owner, and released it as open source. Version 5.4.0 came out in 2021 and 5.6.1 in 2024. It is the second most common package on our list, and most AmiExpress boards you can call today run the rewrite.
