The story
This is the 1541 as it was first built: Japanese production from the drive's early years. Japanese-built units carry serial numbers beginning with AB, and they take power through the older style of inlet rather than the standard IEC kettle-style socket of later drives.
Functionally it is the same 1541 as every other: a 5.25-inch single-sided drive storing about 170 KB per disk, talking to the Commodore 64, VIC-20 or 128 over the serial bus. The differences are in the manufacturing: the factory, the power supply design inside and the board revision. Collectors tell the two production lines apart by the serial plate and the power inlet on the back.
