Commodore's Callback 8020 flip phone

Not everything Commodore makes this year has a cartridge port. The Callback 8020 is a flip phone, and its point is what it leaves out: it blocks social media apps in the hardware itself, a design Commodore has a patent pending on. It still runs most everyday Android apps, plays high-quality music and carries a 48 megapixel Sony camera.

It comes in five finishes with Commodore names: BASIC Beige, ProtoPET White, SX Silver, a see-through blue Starlight Edition and a Founders Edition. Before pre-orders opened on June 30, Commodore cut the price of the first four by $100, to $399, and explained why in public: memory prices, its promise not to sell customers' data, and the accessories it had been bundling. The earphones and the faster memory are now options at checkout instead.

The phone had its first hands-on showing at Gamescom, and pre-orders are open. Commodore has not announced a ship date.
