With advancement to the knockout stage already locked up, Mexico manager Javier Aguirre will reportedly rotate his squad, including starting legendary goalkeeper Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa, who will make a historic appearance in what will be the final World Cup of his career.
Ochoa, 40, was named to Mexico’s roster for a sixth World Cup this summer, joining an exclusive club that includes global icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Yet despite the milestone call-up, the longtime Mexican star has yet to step onto the field, serving as backup to 26-year-old goalkeeper Raúl Rangel.
That will change against Czechia, according to John Sutcliffe of ESPN.
With the result carrying little significance for Mexico’s tournament positioning, it is the perfect opportunity for Aguirre to give Ochoa one final World Cup appearance on home soil.
Few players are more closely associated with the tournament than Ochoa, whose unforgettable performances against Brazil in 2014, Germany in 2018 and Poland in 2022 helped cement his legacy as one of Mexico’s greatest international players.
“This is going to be my last one,” Ochoa recently said while reflecting on his career. “Now there’s no turning back.”
Sutcliffe also reported that striker Santiago Giménez will return to the starting lineup.
The AC Milan forward endured a frustrating season after suffering a significant ankle injury that limited his club campaign and prevented him from establishing himself as Mexico’s first-choice striker during the group stage.
With knockout matches looming, Aguirre is expected to hand Giménez a start against Czechia, allowing the 25-year-old valuable minutes to regain rhythm and confidence before the tournament enters its win-or-go-home phase.
For Mexico, the primary objective has already been accomplished. But for Ochoa and Giménez, Tuesday’s match could serve as both a celebration of one remarkable career and a crucial tune-up for a player hoping to help lead El Tri on a deep World Cup run.
