Fresh off the success of the breakout hit “Backrooms,” which he produced with A24, Peter Chernin hosted a fundraiser at his house for a quartet of politicians on Saturday who are key to Democrats’ hope of flipping the U.S. Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.
Chernin and his wife Megan hosted over 100 guests, including Damon and Heidi Lindelof among others at their home to support the political campaigns of Texas’ James Talarico, New Hampshire’s Chris Pappas, Ohio’s Sherrod Brown and Alaska’s Mary Peltola.
The event, which raised over $800K was emceed by Billy Crystal.
Also on hand was Sen. Adam Schiff and Sen. Mark Kelly.
Said one attendee: ”There was an optimistic vibe. People weren’t just spewing vitriol about Trump. It felt hopeful.”
Chernin, the onetime Fox Group CEO, is riding high on the success of “Backrooms,” which was made for $10M and surpassed $100M in six days at the box office. The film is nearing $250M globally and is A24’s biggest movie ever.
Chernin told CNBC of the edgy horror film by 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons: “Hollywood has been guilty of being a little bit cynical and essentially creating a brand management sort of manufacturing process, consistently feeding audiences a diet of sequels…One of the things that really resonated is that this feels like a movie with young people’s IP.”
