A truck and a Jeep were swallowed up by a sinkhole while waiting at a red light in Omaha, Nebraska, dramatic video shows.
The Dodge Ram pickup and a Jeep SUV were stopped at the intersection of 67th and Pacific Streets Tuesday afternoon when the ground suddenly gave way beneath them sending the vehicles into the deep hole, according to security footage from University of Nebraska-Omaha Public Safety.
The sinkhole opened as two drivers were waiting at a red light. AP The truck driver is able to climb out of his passenger side door and pull himself out to the street as good Samaritans stopped their cars, ran over and helped lift the driver of the Jeep out of the deep fissure.
“This caught everybody by surprise,” Omaha Police Lt. Dan Martin told WOWT at the scene.
A crane was called to lift the truck from the sinkhole. AP Both vehicles were hauled out of the hole by a heavy-duty tow truck around 5:30 p.m., two hours after the road caved in.
A water main broke after the cars fell in, and the Omaha Police Department said they expect the road to be closed for several days, warning the sinkhole could possibly expand.
