Kelly Ripa Is Convinced ‘Paradise’ Creator Dan Fogelman “Watched Soaps As A Kid” Because He “Will Kill Off The Lead Actor” And Still “Bring Them Back For Every Episode”

If anyone has a grasp on This is Us and Paradise creator Dan Fogelman‘s writing style, it’s Sterling K. Brown… and perhaps Kelly Ripa, too.

Spoilers for Paradise Season 1, streaming on Hulu.

Brown, who has starred in the hit NBC family drama as Randall Pearson and currently stars in the Hulu post-apocalyptic thriller series as Secret Service Agent Xavier Collins , appeared on Thursday’s Live with Kelly and Mark to chat about Paradise Season 2, which premiered on Monday (Feb. 23).

Mark Consuelos asked Brown, if fans can expect to see James Marsden return as U.S. President Cal Bradford “in a flashback” in the new season. For those unfamiliar with Paradise, Cal is killed in the very beginning of the series.

Brown quipped, “In a Fogelman show, you can die from the beginning, and be in the show the whole time.”

Ripa offered up her own theory behind the method to Fogleman’s madness.

“I can’t prove it, but I know he watched soaps as a kid,” Ripa claimed. “Because he will kill off the lead actor, the main people, and bring them back for every episode. It’s amazing.”

Brown agreed with a laugh, “Yes, he will. He probably did. You’re right. It’s soaps.”

The All My Children added, “I can’t prove it, but I know. If you know, you know.”

Live with Kelly and Mark airs on weekdays. Check out their website for your local listings. The first three episodes of Paradise Season 2 are streaming on Hulu, with new episodes being released on Mondays at 12 a.m. ET.
