Police received the first report of the collision near Sham Tseng Fire Station on the Yuen Long-bound fast lane of the major highway at 7.47am, while an amber rainstorm warning was in force.
A private car driver in his 30s reported hand injuries after his vehicle’s airbag deployed during the crash, the force said, adding that three ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
Videos circulating online showed vehicles slamming into each other in a chain-reaction, bumper-to-bumper crash. The impact left the hoods of several private cars crumpled.
The Transport Department said at 9.18am that a section of the Yuen Long-bound lanes on Tuen Mun Road near Sham Tseng had been closed to all traffic, urging motorists to use alternative routes such as the Tai Lam Tunnel and Castle Peak Road as congestion built up in the area.
The weather was rainy on Thursday, with the amber rainstorm warning in force between 5.15am and 9.30am, indicating that more than 30mm of rain had fallen or was expected to fall within an hour across Hong Kong.
