LA wanted law and order; Nathan Hochman delivers it with burglar busts

Add The California Post on Google Law enforcement has taken down another dangerous gang — this time, seven members of a South American gang that is part of a burglary ring targeting local residents.

The gangsters would smash windows and break into homes to steal whatever they could — often with residents still inside, including children.

We have seen high-profile busts by federal law enforcement. But this was a local takedown, carried out by the LAPD and the LA County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).

District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the arrests Wednesday, describing the gang and its tactics, as well as how law enforcement caught and broke the ring.

REUTERS Hochman, playing it straight, said that there was nothing “political” about the bust, even though it comes as California voters are filling out their ballots and heading to the polls.

Two years ago, LA County was stuck with DA George Gascón, a left-wing radical who put “criminal justice reform” first and fighting crime last.

Gascón was backed by left-wing billionaire donor George Soros, and therefore every member of the California political establishment.

Two years ago, LA County was stuck with DA George Gascón, a left-wing radical who put “criminal justice reform” first and fighting crime last. AP He was endorsed, for example, by Governor Gavin Newsom, who had once brought Gascón to San Francisco. It was hardly a coincidence that San Francisco began a slide into crime from which it has only recently started to recover.

As soon as Gascón took office in 2020, things in Los Angeles went from bad to worse. Gascón tied prosecutors’ hands and prided himself on keeping criminals out of jail.

There were two attempts to recall Gascón. Both failed to collect the massive number of signatures needed in LA County — though the second effort only failed because county officials disqualified just enough signatures to keep the DA in office.

Voters ultimately had their say in 2024, ousting Gascón and electing Hochman by a huge margin.

The effect was almost immediate. Hochman let prosecutors do their jobs, and crime fell.

During the Palisades Fire, Hochman was one of the only executive officials in LA who was seen as having done a good job, catching looters and defending the evacuated neighborhoods.

So while Wednesday’s arrests did not have a partisan motive, they do have political implications.

Across the state, we have seen the result of an experiment in law enforcement.

We have tried radical “reform,” and we have also tried common-sense “law-and-order.” It’s clear which of these two approaches keeps us safe.
