Why I’d rather watch my AI bird feeder’s camera coverage than Netflix

Amazon My phone used to send me spam, now it just tells me which cardinal is currently eating me out of house and home — spoiler: I love it! Today, this Kiwibit Solar Smart Bird Feeder with Camera is 33% off and is my new favorite toy.

It’s become the gateway to becoming a birder in Central Park, and I’m not mad about it. In fact, I’m already researching binoculars to help identify species. My New York apartment now feeds a man, a woman, a mini sheepadoodle, two cardinals, a house finch, and a blue jay. Our family is growing.

Thankfully, the pigeons haven’t discovered it, and that may be due to the gourmet seeds I chose that attract “songbirds.”

This birdfeeder has ultra-high-definition 8MP resolution with HDR enhancement to capture vivid, detailed footage of birds even in challenging lighting conditions. The system uses a PIR motion sensor to detect visitors, which triggers the built-in AI to identify the specific species from a database of over 10,000 birds and send a real-time notification to your smartphone when you opt in for the subscription.

Its design centers on a 1.5-liter weatherproof seed hopper and an integrated 4.4W solar roof that powers the 5,200mAh rechargeable battery.

There’s two-way audio for listening to birdsongs and speaking to them if you’d like, but I just listen to what they have to say and hope they enjoy the food. The camera is also a motion detector, which can also work as a secondary high-resolution monitor for general home safety and is lasered in on my patio door.

Storage is managed through a combination of local microSD recording and cloud services, allowing you to easily save and share your backyard discoveries via the dedicated mobile app.

When you set this up, you must manually turn on the solar panel setting in the app for it to actually recharge. It’s crucial you switch this on for live constant coverage. If you don’t, the rechargeable battery will just die, and you’ll be stuck dragging a USB-C cable out to your patio.

Be prepared for the upkeep, AI identification, and cloud features to run about $7.99 a month, or a lump sum of $99+ a year for a family plan. I prefer the family plan because now both my husband and I are switching between logins to get notifications. It would be easier if they just came in to both of us at the same time.

It’s basically a Netflix subscription for your birds, but honestly, the entertainment value is worth it. I never thought I would get this addicted to bird watching, and now I’m already looking up books to study the birds in the park.

Below is a screen recording of a Cardinal who dropped in for a visit and saved on my app for when I need a smile. It’ll be the most fun you’ve had all year — trust me.
