NYC ‘super speeders’ face crackdown, mandatory speed limiters

ALBANY – Lead-footed Big Apple speed demons are being put on notice as state lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hochul clear the way for a program that would allow authorities to install speed interlock devices on their rides.

After receiving 16 tickets from automated cameras within a year, authorities can install a speed limiter on the vehicles of offenders under the so-called “super speeders act” being included in the final state budget deal, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday.

The speed limiter provision is being added to the final state budget Stephen Yang for NY Post Super speeders will face stiff penalties if they get more than 16 automated speeding ticket in a year. Christopher Sadowski “New York is putting these super speeders on notice. You will not flout our laws and you’ll not endanger children, pedestrians and other drivers who deserve to feel safe on our highways,” Hochul told reporters while announcing a “general agreement” on the state budget Thursday morning.

She called such offenders “callous” and said she was particularly proud of the deal struck with the legislature on the program.

“People shouldn’t be terrified to push a baby stroller down the street,” she said.

While the details of how the program will operate are yet to be released, Hochul and her staff confirmed to reporters that it would only be implemented in New York City, though all drivers would be subject to the restraints.
