Amazon's fresh groceries and everyday essentials assortments grew approximately three times faster than the rest of its store, representing around half of all units sold during its third quarter, Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy told investors Thursday.

The company's increasing delivery speed is fueling its grocery business, with perishables and everyday essentials and gross sales totalling close to $250 billion over the past year, Jassy said during the company's third-quarter earnings call.

Whole Foods Market is also contributing to Amazon's grocery success, with the specialty grocer growing faster than the rest of the company's grocery segment, he said.

Amazon continues to see value in its grocery business, as customers who purchase perishables with same-day delivery buy nearly seven times more everyday essential units than those who don't, Jassy told investors. In addition, active grocery customers shop nearly four times more non-grocery categories like home and apparel and spend more than double on those categories compared to non-grocery shoppers, he said.

"We really are excited that we feel like we found something with shipping perishables out of our same-day facilities," Jassy said.

Prime members are leaning into Amazon's grocery offerings, CFO Brian Olsavsky said during the earnings call. Over the past year, monthly fresh grocery orders placed by Prime members for same-day delivery have more than tripled, he said.

Although it shuttered its brick-and-mortar supermarket and convenience store banners earlier this year, Amazon has rapidly expanded perishables delivery over the past year. A few months ago, the company announced an expansion of its 30-minute delivery service that includes fresh groceries and nonfood items.

Whole Foods' successful initiatives, meanwhile, include its small-format Daily Shop, a concept that debuted in New York City in 2024 and will continue rolling out over the next couple of years, according to Jassy.

"We believe that the progress we're making on perishables and grocery is going to ultimately lead to [us] being more relevant to customers for more of their shopping missions," he said.
