Batten down the hatches, because trouble is here. Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, said on the evening of Oct. 29 that hackers had stolen about $6.3 billion from its coffers. That means it just experienced the biggest crypto hack in history, and perhaps even the biggest heist in history, period.

The market's response has been predictably sour. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) lost 5.6% within 24 hours of the hack being announced, while BNB (CRYPTO: BNB), the native coin of the Binance-linked BNB Chain, fell 6.2%.

The damage to coin prices may not be over. So what comes next for the crypto market?

In terms of the immediate market outlook, the direct losses from the hack already appear covered.

Binance had a rainy-day fund worth around $1 billion before this, and its management also says it has set aside more than $6.3 billion of its own capital to restore any affected customer balances, so it's reasonable to expect that all affected users will likely be made whole.

Another critical piece of context is that crypto hacks and theft are, unfortunately, as old as the asset class itself, and actually very common.

In 2011, hackers stole approximately 25,000 BTC from the Mt. Gox exchange, which at the time was the biggest. More than $3.3 billion was lost to hacks, exploits, and scams in 2025, and more than $8.7 billion has been lost in 2026 so far, including the Binance hack.

In light of 2025's toll and the advent of advanced artificial intelligence systems that streamline both cyber intrusion and cyber defense, the industry's responsiveness to these threats is improving rapidly. Tether froze more than $1.5 billion of its USDT stablecoin within an hour of the Binance hack being detected, and Circle Internet Group also froze $800 million of its USD Coin tied to the theft in the same period. This means the hackers couldn't exfiltrate the funds represented by those stablecoins for laundering and retention.

The major blockchains themselves continued to work as intended throughout the hack and afterward. While the attackers used a feature from a 2025 Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) upgrade to help empty certain Binance wallets, the trick only worked because they had first broken into Binance's own systems. So the blockchains themselves weren't breached.

The Binance hack is one more piece of evidence that the crypto market is on the front lines of the global cybersecurity crisis that's being fueled (and also mitigated) by AI. More serious breaches are inevitable and imminent.

The crypto industry will now, in all probability, accelerate its ongoing shift toward prioritizing cybersecurity investments to harden blockchains, wallet applications, decentralized finance (DeFi) projects, and centralized exchanges. Generally speaking, the biggest chains like Ethereum and Bitcoin had already striven to meet high standards of cybersecurity practices before this latest incident, and their hardening efforts will likely intensify and subsequently serve as models for smaller players to emulate. That does not mean that investors can relax just yet, as widespread theft could still affect them if their coins are not stored securely.

For most people, the simplest approach that provides the very highest level of security is to hold their crypto via a spot exchange-traded fund (ETF), which delegates the safe custody of the coins to a deep-pocketed asset manager that handles cybersecurity on their behalf. For example, the iShares Bitcoin Trust, the market's largest spot Bitcoin ETF, relies on its custodian, Coinbase Global, which keeps the keys in cold storage (offline), in accounts segregated from the custodian's own assets.

If you'd rather hold your coins more directly, use a large U.S.-regulated crypto exchange that discloses its custody practices. Coinbase, for instance, says that it aims to hold no more than 2% of its custodied assets in hot (online) wallets. Its crypto isn't government-insured, though, so even holding your crypto on an exchange isn't risk-free.

What is especially risky right now is self-custodying your coins, especially if you're not highly technical. Common wallet applications are likely to get hacked, and depending on how you store your cryptocurrency, it may then be possible to drain investors' funds.

The crypto market will likely recover from the dip caused by the Binance hack over time, as it has historically done after major hacks in the past.

But when it comes to which coins will recover the fastest and perhaps grow the most, I bet it'll be the projects most serious about cybersecurity leading the pack.
